Celebrate PRIDE with Patricia Cornwell

PATRICIA CORNWELL

Patricia Cornwell is a contemporary American author.  Her novels, fiction and non-fiction, are centered heavily on crime and what it takes to solve the most gruesome and intense murders.  She is most known for her series featuring medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta.

Cornwell draws much of her inspiration and medical know-how from her past careers as a crime-beat reporter for The Charlotte Observer as well as a technical writing / computer analyst for the Office of the Medical Examiner of Virginia.   She also volunteered with the Richmond Police Department.

Her Kay Scarpetta series is driven forward by exciting action scenes and ruthless killers that Dr. Scarptta and her colleagues frequently interact with, typically resulting in an ugly blowout between doctor and killer.   It is believed that these novels are the influence for t.v. crime-dramas such as “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” and documentaries like “Cold Case Files”.

Cornwell has also written a few non-fiction novels focusing on true crimes; most importantly the unsolved mystery of Jack the Ripper.  She has self-financed her continuous research in proving that painter Walter Sickert was the infamous London serial killer.  Much of her evidence is presented in her non-fiction work “Portrait of a Killer—Jack the Ripper:  Case Closed”, which despite much controversy from the British art world, was published in 2002.  “Chasing the Ripper” followed in 2014.

Below is a full list of the Kay Scarpetta series.  The most recent one, “Flesh and Blood” was released in November of 2014.  Her next book, “Depraved Heart” is set to release in October of 2015.

Celebrate PRIDE with Chuck Palahniuk

CHUCK PALAHNIUK

Chuck Palahniuk is an American author.  His writing style, in which he seamlessly blends reality and storytelling, is unique and often described as “transgressional fiction”.  His characters are typically individuals that break free of societal norms and expectations in unusual or illicit ways.  It is safe to say that Chuck’s writings are not for the faint of heart, but once you read one you feel a very strange and unexplainable need to dig yourself deeper and deeper into his literary world.

Perhaps Chuck’s most famous novel is “Fight Club”, which was published in 1996 and made into the cult classic film in 1999.  His fourth novel “Choke” was also made into a movie in 2008.  Recently talks have begun to develop “Lullaby”, which was published in 2002 into a film adaptation as well.

As an adult Mr. Palahniuk joined a rebellious group called the Cacophy Society in which hijinks and pranks are just a few of the over-the-top activities members participate in.  Chuck used his membership in the Society as inspiration for Project Mayhem in “Fight Club”.

To date, Chuck Palahniuk has 15 fictional novels, 1 collection, 1 novella and 2 non-fiction works under his belt.  His most recent book, “Make Something Up:  Stories You Can’t Unread” was released May 2015.
